Since its inception, Haikou's Wuyuanhe National Wetland Park has been constantly working to improve the monitoring and protection of the park's natural environment. According to the Haikou Wetland Conservation and Management Center, this year has seen 14 previously unrecorded species — inclusive of four national Class II protected species and one never before recorded in Hainan dragonfly — show up to take advantage of the park's enriched conditions.

The 14 include eight types of birds — the Jerdon's Baza (Aviceda jerdoni), Fairy Pitta (Pitta nympha), Japanese Thrush (Turdus cardis), Olive-Backed Pipit (Anthus hodgsoni), Scaly Thrush (Zoothera dauma), Verditer Flycatcher (Eumyias thalassinus), Eurasian Woodcock (Scolopax rusticola), and Ashy Woodswallow (Artamus fuscus); two types of reptile — the Chinese Cave Gecko (Goniurosaurus hainanensis) and Doria's Asian Treefrog (Chirixalus doriae); and four types of insects - the Common Birdwing (Troides helena), Forest Chaser (Lyriothemis elegantissima), Long Legged Marsh Glider (Trithemis pallidinervis), and Greater Blue Wing (Rhyothemis plutonia). This was the first time ever that a Forest Chaser dragonfly was seen in Hainan.
