In order to benefit more people and cover a wider range of special medicines, an upgraded version of a supplementary commercial medical insurance was launched at Boao Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone in Hainan. Local authorities said that eligible buyers can be insured for up to one million yuan (about $143,500) by paying an annual premium of 29 yuan (about $4.2).

All Hainan island residents, regardless of age, health condition, or occupation, can participate in the new Lecheng medical insurance program, if they:
a) have a registered permanent residence in Hainan; OR
b) are enrolled in the basic medical insurance program in Hainan; OR
c) are immediate family members of those enrolled in the basic medical insurance program in Hainan; OR
d) have a registered temporary residence in Hainan AND have been living in Hainan for at least one year when the insurance comes into effect.
The new insurance medicine catalog includes 40 types of special medicines available in China, as well as 60 types of innovative international medicines that have been approved for use only in the international market and Boao Lecheng, thanks to the exclusive favorable policies of the pilot zone.
The new insurance program provides two plans for participants. Both plans cover the cost of medicines listed in the catalog. Plan A allows those eligible to enjoy an insurance amount of up to one million yuan (about $143,500) by paying an annual premium of 29 yuan (about $4.2) and has no threshold requirements for compensation. Plan B covers medical treatment expenses at certain designated hospitals in Lecheng, as well as hospitalization costs not covered by the basic medical insurance. Those eligible can enjoy an insurance amount of up to 3 million yuan (about $430,500) by paying an annual premium of 99 yuan (about $14.2).
The program also provides health management services for eligible buyers, including advanced screening for major diseases, international medicine sourcing, online medical consultation, MDT (Multidisciplinary Diagnosis and Treatment), expedited channels for medical treatment, and more.
