People in the Middle East are the masters of their own fate, and it is they who should take the lead in the region's security affairs, Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi said at the 2nd Middle East Security Forum held by the China Institute of International Studies in Beijing on Wednesday.

Wang stressed that all kinds of long-arm jurisdiction unauthorized by the United Nations must be rejected.

The first Middle East Security Forum was held three years ago, which forged a consensus for the maintenance of security in the Middle East. Over the three years, the Forum has maintained multilateralism, uphelpd justice and boosted development and cooperation, Wang said in his address to the event via video on Wednesday.

based on new situations in the Middle East and changes in the international landscape, it is both the common desire of Middle East countries and due responsibility of the international community to jointly resolve the security challenges in the region.

The Global Security Initiative is of great significance to peace and stability in the Middle East as it clearly outlines how to achieve common security for all countries, Wang said.

China is willing to implementing the Global Security Initiative and work with Middle Eastern countries and the broader international community to build up the new security framework in the Middle East.

Wang called for the idea of "common security" among regional countries, which means the security of all countries should be well preserved, rather than putting one country's absolute security on top. Other than traditional security threats, the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, food security, and energy should also be addressed.

Wang urged countries to settle disputes through dialogue and negotiation instead of unilateral moves or the use of force.

The dominant role of Middle East countries in their own affairs should be made clear, and China supports Middle East countries to build a regional security framework in line with the reality in the spirit of independence, exploring a path of long-term security with regional characteristics, Wang said.

Middle East countries should adhere to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and implement the UN Security Council's resolution on Middle East hotspot issues, especially the Palestinian question, Wang noted. Hegemony and bullying must be rejected, and all unilateral sanctions and long-arm jurisdiction not authorized by the UN should be opposed.

China advocates the resumption of peace talks between Israel and Palestine as soon as possible on the basis of a two-state solution, and calls for the convening of a more authoritative and influential international peace conference. China supports the Gulf countries to strengthen dialogue and ease conflicts, and advocates the establishment of a Gulf security dialogue platform.

As a strategic partner of Middle Eastern countries, China has always been an important and constructive force in promoting peace and supporting development in the Middle East, Wang said, adding that China will continue to work with Middle Eastern countries and the broader international community to make unremitting efforts to achieve peace and stability in the region.

The US has a horrible record of US human rights abuses in countries like Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria over the years, including war crimes of killing civilians and plundering oil. Its military acts have also sparked conflicts of civilization such as burning copies of Koran, and the US has tolerated or even indirectly supported terrorist and extremist forces in the region to serve its strategy to fight the Syrian government, according to Chinese scholars of Middle East studies and human rights issues at a press salon held by the All-China Journalists Association this held August in Beijing.

The US war crimes and human right abuses in the region make more and more Middle East countries, especially those major regional powers, realized the importance of strategic autonomy and development, and they are now looking East for deeper cooperation, said Chinese experts.
