The United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758 not only completely resolved the issue of the representation of the whole of China, including the island of Taiwan, in the UN and other international institutions, but also made it clear that China has only one seat in the UN, the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said on Tuesday, adding that the one-China principle has become a common consensus of the international community and universally recognized basic norm governing international relations.
Resolution 2758 was adopted by the 26th UNGA on October 25, 1971 that solved the issue of China’s UN representation. With the adoption of this resolution, the People’s Republic of China (PRC) was recognized as the “only lawful representative of China.”
However, some US media and politicians are peddling the fallacy that Resolution 2758 does not address the island’s status, aiming to help expand the island of Taiwan’s “international space.”
The Diplomat said in one of its reports that the resolution served to “expel forthwith the representatives of Chiang Kai-shek, while the core assertion of Beijing’s one-China principle, “Taiwan is part of the PRC,” is nowhere to be found. In fact, the word “Taiwan” is not even mentioned in the resolution; nor is the Republic of China (ROC).
Resolution 2758 completely blocked the space for anyone, any country or any force to attempt to create “two Chinas” or "one China, one Taiwan," Wang said. The island of Taiwan has no basis, reason or right to participate in the UN and other international organizations that only sovereign states can participate in.
Wang said that the number of countries with which China has diplomatic relations has increased from 60 to 181 in the past 51 years on the basis of adhering to the one-China principle, which fully shows that adhering to the one-China principle is the general principle of the international community.
Some forces in the US have maliciously misinterpreted Resolution 2758, hyped up the “Taiwan’s participation in the UN system,” and tried to fudge, hollow out and distort its one-China commitment, and connived at and supported secessionist activities for "Taiwan independence," all of which have had a serious negative impact on peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits, Wang said.
Wang said the history of more than half a century has proved that Resolution 2758 cannot be challenged and the one-China principle cannot be shaken. China will unswervingly advance with the complete reunification of the country.
