China and Sri Lanka are traditional friendly neighbors. In recent years, under the promotion of the governments of the two countries and through the unremitting efforts of the enterprises of both sides, the bilateral economic and trade cooperation has developed rapidly and achieved remarkable results. The projects undertaken by Chinese enterprises in the fields of transportation, energy, water conservancy, and telecommunications play an important role in the economic and social development of Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankan government is committed to attracting foreign investment, improving infrastructure conditions, and developing key industries such as tourism, medicine, and agriculture. There is huge potential and bright prospect for the two sides to strengthen investment cooperation in these fields.

According to China Customs statistics, in 2014, the total bilateral trade between China and Sri Lanka was 4.042 billion US dollars, of which China exported 3.793 billion US dollars to Sri Lanka, and China imported 249 million US dollars from Sri Lanka, an increase of 11.66%, 10.35% and 36.24% respectively.
