market analysis

Egypt is a member of the Common Market of Southeast Africa (COMESA), with 20 countries and a market capacity of 400 million people. As a member of the COMESA Free Trade Agreement, its furniture and wood products have the priority to export to the Southeast African market. Egypt is the second largest furniture exporter after China. It is a furniture production base in Europe and the United States, mainly exported to the United States, Italy and Saudi Arabia. As a major local export product, the total production of local furniture reaches US $3 billion each year, of which the export amount reaches US $1 billion. Egypt's domestic consumption of wooden furniture is up to 750 million dollars. Egypt has a total of 58000 furniture manufacturers, with a total workforce of about 400000. The wood industry is an important economic pillar. Last year, Egypt spent more than 8 billion dollars in the construction industry, which is a potential furniture and construction market in Central and Northeast Africa.

Egypt has a long history of wood processing industry centered on furniture production. Since 2014, the external demand for Egyptian woodworking products has been expanding, increasing by 9% compared with 2013, reaching 376 million dollars. According to the survey of Yingtuo Exhibition, with the implementation of large infrastructure projects of the Egyptian government, especially the rise of residential and commercial real estate, Egypt's woodworking industry will have a great space for development. However, various wood production and furniture manufacturing links in Egypt are generally faced with problems such as backward industry, outdated equipment, poor quality of wood products produced and processed, and lack of market competitiveness. Moreover, the local government encourages enterprises to export, increases the added value of forestry products, supports the development of domestic wood processing industry, and encourages foreign investment in wood processing industry is an inevitable trend, which is also an important direction for Chinese investors to invest in forestry. At present, most of the timber, woodworking machinery and woodworking tools in Egypt are imported. The main importing countries are China, Romania, Ukraine, Türkiye and Russia, with large market demand.
